This essay should be required reading for anyone who works with students who have hearing and vision loss, service providers, and family and friends of people living with Usher's. I have been in the profession for many decades and have a lot of background knowledge. But that doesn't compare to understanding someone's lived experiences. In sharing these honest and vulnerable words, you have profoundly deepened the awareness of what it's like to navigate the world each day with sensory deficits. Bravo! And keep writing!

Something just happened that I had to share. My daughter Delanie is reading this essay right now. She texted me: "Can you not hear the S in our last name?!"

I told her no, I cannot hear the S. But I know when someone drops it. And that confused both of us for a second. How do you know a sound is missing if you cannot hear it?

Here is what I figured out. When you say "Hubers," your mouth is already shaping the S while still making the R. That changes the R. It gets shorter, tighter. When you say "Huber" without the S, the R is longer, more open. Try it yourself right now. Say both. The R sounds different.

I am not hearing the S. I am hearing what the S does to the R. The S leaves a fingerprint on the sound before it. My brain learned that fingerprint for my own name decades ago.

And that is why "cat" and "cats" are harder. The T and S are made in almost the same spot in your mouth. The tongue barely moves. Not enough of a fingerprint for my brain to catch.

Delanie tested it with her boyfriend Dakota. They both said the R sounds different. Her words: "You hit the R a little harder without the S at the end." Two hearing people confirming what I have been doing my whole life without knowing it had a name.

Think about what the brain is doing here. I cannot hear the S. But my brain built a detection system for it anyway. It learned that when the S is coming, the sound before it changes shape. It cataloged those changes for thousands of words over decades. Nobody taught it to do that. No audiologist programmed it. My brain figured it out on its own because it had to.

That is the prediction engine I talked about in the essay. Except it goes deeper than I realized. I am not just predicting words from context. I am detecting missing sounds from the fingerprints they leave behind. My brain has been doing this my whole life and I did not know until my daughter asked the right question tonight.

That is why I write these.
